Stratum basale (basal layer)

The stratum basale, also known as the basal layer, is the deepest layer of the epidermis. It consists of a single layer of continuously dividing basal cells that give rise to new keratinocytes. This layer is essential for skin regeneration and contains melanocytes, which produce melanin, and Merkel cells, which are involved in sensory perception.
