Championing Equality in Science and Research with Hanna Sandvall
1. What are your hopes for the future of women in science and research, and what changes do you think are necessary to make those hopes a reality?
When it comes to equality in having equal access to the right medicines and treatments, we still have a way to go as a society. My hope for the future is that we will see great progress in tailoring treatments, medicines, and technology to diverse groups. For instance, increased research and awareness are needed on women’s symptoms of cardiovascular diseases to save lives.
Historically, women have been underrepresented in studies. To address this gap, as well as the gap for socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, we need diverse experts and leaders to bring research focus and enhance access to trials and treatments. Leadership that reflects this spectrum is crucial to fully meeting the multifaceted needs, unlocking potential, and harnessing the innovative power required for developing today’s and tomorrow’s vital vaccines, medicines, treatments, and technology.
2. What defining moment in your career propelled you into a leadership role, and how has it shaped your approach to leading your business unit?
Realizing the impact of influencing a team rather than working individually was a turning point in my career. Stepping into leadership roles allowed me to create optimal conditions for team success, whether it was a small local team or a large global one. My approach revolves around transparent communication, fostering team spirit, staying close to customers and teams, leading by example, and staying open to new ideas for collective success.
3. What woman has inspired you most to pursue your career in life sciences/research, and how has her influence shaped your professional journey?
Upon entering the pharmaceutical industry, I transitioned from a quality-focused role to sales. At that time, the sales environment was male-dominated, prompting me to draw inspiration and motivation from within myself and my surroundings. As I progressed in leadership, I’ve been fortunate to have several inspiring female role models. I make it a point to learn something from every individual I meet, and I feel lucky to receive daily inspiration from the great people around me.
Reflecting on life’s inspiration, my grandmother stands out as a guiding force. Her resilience and unwavering appreciation for life have consistently served as a source of inspiration throughout my journey.
4. As a champion for diversity and inclusion, how have you actively fostered an inclusive culture within your team, and what impact has it had on your unit’s dynamics?
I take pride in our diverse team at TFS. One example of creating female role models is that our executive management team is more than 50% female, all with various backgrounds and specialties. This diversity contributes to a rich and inclusive culture, positively impacting our unit’s dynamics.
5. As a woman in leadership, what advice do you have for aspiring female professionals looking to advance their careers and break through barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields?
My advice is to believe in yourself, be ambitious, invest additional time in skill development, be kind to yourself, seek win-win situations, and remember to find joy in your journey.
6. What advice would you give to allies who want to support women in science and research but aren’t sure how to be most effective?
Regardless of gender, leading by example, staying curious, monitoring progress, fostering open communication, and offering flexibility for optimal performance and work-life balance are effective ways for allies to support women in science and research.
7. Looking ahead, what are your visions and goals for the future of your business unit, and how do you plan to lead your team toward continued success and growth?
Our success centers around our people. A primary focus for continued success and growth is to attract and develop exceptional individuals and harness the collective potential of the entire team.
